“Genesis” the Google tool that “disturbs” the media

Google created a platform called “Genesis” which consists of “helping a journalist”, as revealed by the New York Times. Although the tool is in “an early phase”, it uses nervousness in the mainstream media. The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal also contribute to these early essays.

It is a “personal assistant” for journalists that will allow them to “collect information on current events and generate news content.” However, the report published by the NYT was considered by some executives who had access to the platform “worrying” for the future of information.

“In partnership with media outlets, especially smaller ones, we are in the early stages of exploring ideas for leveraging AI tools to help their journalists with their work,” a Google spokesperson explained in a statement released by the AFP news agency.

“Simply put, these tools are not intended to and cannot replace the essential role that journalists have in reporting and verifying their stories,” he stressed.

How “Genesis” works

As explained by specialists from the technology company, based in Mountain View, California, this tool would work as a kind of co-pilot for reporters and editors, offering title options or different writing styles.

The announcement of this Google project follows the news of an agreement between OpenAI and The Associated Press (AP), through which the firm that created ChatGPT was granted a license to use the files of said international news agency since 1985, to train the AI.

“The arrangement provides for OpenAI to license part of AP’s text archive, while AP will leverage OpenAI’s technology and product expertise,” the two organizations said in a joint statement last week.

Artificial intelligence: a threat to human employment?

GPT chat

The debate on the consequences of artificial intelligence deepened with the appearance in 2022 of ChatGPT and other generative AI developments. This tool, capable of creating all kinds of texts or images from a simple question, causes nervousness among content creators, such as artists, authors or journalists.

Several lawsuits were even filed against the companies involved, including OpenAI. On the other hand, the professionals accuse them of using their contents without consent or remuneration to feed their computer programs, AFP concluded.
