Only 150 kilometers from the capital of Córdoba and 17 kilometers from Villa de Soto, the site we chose to base, the pichanas dam It offers a natural environment that includes forests of quebracho colorado and horco quebracho, among other native species that also surround the lake. The journey that took us to this wonderful environment, practically virgin, we did in 4×4 trucks, crossing rough roads between the mountains and taking everything necessary for the day, including the boat.
Scam 440 hectares of water, The Pichanas Dam is the ideal place for fishermen looking for a quiet space for recreational fishing and there it is possible to find tarariras, carp and silversides in abundance, of superlative size and robustness. We arrived at sunrise and while we were preparing rods and lines, we observed in ecstasy around us the landscape in which we were surrounded, with endless mountain ranges that seemed to be born from the bottom of the lake, an immense mass of calm and transparent water that awaited us, when at the same time, calves, horses and herons played on the edge of the lake.
The type of fishing differs a lot from what we Buenos Aires residents know and only buoys can be used when the silverside is feeding on the surface. The rig that works in depths of more than ten meters, is formed by making a slip knot in the nylon of the reel, which will be the stop for the paternoster. The same, can end in two simple hooks or in tandem like a rocker. For the lines of type seesaw or apparatus short rods can be chosen, between 2.40 and 3 m, with tip action. With this same equipment we can work the flight line, although with a rod that is around 4 m, a little more uncomfortable for the boat, but that will surely give us better dunking and comfort when hoisting the silverside.
The bait it was the classic crappie that incarnated in any way was attacked aggressively, giving us firm bites, but a little difficult for us to identify at first. Although you can fish with the boat in motion, our guide Franco Catalfamo chose to anchor the boat in front of a sector called “Pan Dulce”, which little by little was delivering larger and larger pieces, with silversides ranging from 30 to 40 cm, robust, with a black back and highly valued for its gastronomic value.
Carlos Ochetti, head of the fishing promotion area of the Córdoba Turismo agency, made it possible for us to visit this lake, which requires permission to fish, there as in other places in the province, which were acquired through the site cazaypesca.cba.gov.ar
The return was with joy to have had one new experience with pejerrey fishing, in an environment that we recommend you try if you visit the province of Córdoba.
