More than 23 years of identity claims: the case of Angel Páez, unrecognized brother of Rossana and María Emilia Chahla
Páez filed a lawsuit to find out his identity in 1999, but only in September 2022 did he take a DNA sample for the first time in the Genetics laboratory of the Forensic Medical Corps of Tucumán, by order of the Civil Family and Inheritance Court III.
Ángel learned that he was the out-of-wedlock son of Chahla, also the father of Rossana and María Emilia, when his mother told him about his origin. He grew up in the town of Leales in Tucuman and used his mother’s last name, a fact that both – according to him – earned them criticism and rejection from the locals.
Her mother was 18 when she became pregnant, she said, “in a town where everyone knows each other.” “My mother never spoke ill of him (by Elías Chahla). She kept silent in the same way that she endured the social condemnation of the time for being a single mother. And I’m not on the warpath. But I have three children and I want justice to be done, that they know where they come from. I hope my sisters do the right thing,” Páez said some time ago.
The man defined the situation as “a struggle” that has “marches and countermarches.”

An unrecognized brother of a minister claims an inheritance of 40 million dollars
“The value of the Biological Relationship Index obtained implies that the finding of the genetic profiles obtained is eight hundred and sixty-seven times more likely, if the biological father of María Emilia and Rossana Elena Chahla is also the biological father of Ángel Eduardo Páez”, added the letter.
The daughters of businessman Chahla rejected the DNA result and there will be a hearing on March 6.
Ángel Eduardo Páez’s lawyer explained in statements to the NA agency that Rossana and María Emilia Chahla, the first of them former Tucumán Health Minister, deputy and pre-candidate for mayor of the provincial capital, “challenged the DNA test and on Monday A hearing will be held on March 6” to define the conflict.
For their part, the Chahla sisters support the position of biochemist Gustavo Penasino, their expert witness, who argued that this percentage is not conclusive, since it should be 99.99 percent.
What the deputy Rossana Chahla said about the case
Some time ago, the legislator of the Frente de Todos explained how the process was and her position regarding the claim: “In January 2016, I was informed of a lawsuit for filiation initiated by Ángel Eduardo Páez, alleging that my father, Elías Chahla, was also his father, thus requesting the recognition of a filial relationship with him. As of being informed, I put everything necessary at the disposal of the Tucumán Justice to arrive at the truth of the matter.”
And he continued: “I was present in the Civil Court for Family and Inheritance of the III Nomination, in charge of Torino, attending all the hearings in which my presence was required, leaving full proof that I was and I was in full disposal of Justice as many times as necessary and all judicial measures that the magistrate considers are arbitrated.
