Although in the last decades it was thought to be extinct in the region, the green macaw –also known as military macaw-, has registered a encouraging and significant growth in Saltaaccording to the third census at the provincial level and the first of a binational nature together with bolivian, that has just been carried out in said northern province.
This phenomenon is due both to the numerous tasks of protection, conservation and control that are being carried out in their natural habitatsas well as the installation of monitoring systems and the awareness and training campaigns for the main actors of civil society and control agents in the protection of this colorful bird original from Americawhose Habitat extends from Mexico to northern parts of Argentina.
“Beyond the numbers, it can be clearly perceived that the population of these beautiful birds is increasingand what before was all rarity, how to observe them with the naked eye in their natural environmenttoday it occurs much more frequently”, recounted Flavio Moschione, Member of the National Parks Administration (APN).
“Until long ago they did not approach the towns, today they are closer, because they are no longer hunted and they are identified as a natural heritageI”, added the specialist.
Lto population of green macaws is located in the extreme north of Salta, while while the park rangers can observe them for the first time in 2007when, at that time, only a few were counted 30 people in the area of the Sierras de Caraparí and the neighboring ravines, the 2021 census showed an approximate population of between 136 specimens as a minimum and 161 as a maximum.
