Atlético Mineiro moves the bank: Chacho Coudet leaves, and the eternal Felipao Scolari enters

After the departure of the Argentine was announced in the last hours Eduardo ‘Chacho’ Coudet of the technical direction of Atletico Mineirothis Friday the Belo Horizonte club announced the hiring of veteran and multi-champion Luiz Felipe Scolari. The ineffable Felipao will pause for a while the retirement he had announced last November, to once again show his wisdom next to the lime line.

Mineiro presented Scolari this Friday as “one of the most victorious coaches in the history of football”. It was shortly after the same social media channel reported the “friendly termination” of the contract with Coudet.

That output of Chacho she was about to not be so friendly, to the point that when the Argentinean announced that he was leaving, the first reaction of some directors of the Brazilian club was to investigate in his contract the possibilities of applying a severe fine for the slamming of the door. However, in later meetings the spirits calmed down and positions were approached, so that the issue went from a possible conflict to a thank you for the services provided to the Argentine DT. Coudet a few days ago had been “pressed” by bars from Mineiro, in an episode that, added to the friction he had with some managers, ended up deciding him to leave.

Coudet completed a good campaign in the 35 games he led Mineiro.

Scolari had in November of last year, after a successful campaign in Paraense that took him no less than the final of the Copa Libertadores, that “I wasn’t going to direct me anymore.” It seemed like the end of an extensive career that led him to win the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan with Brazil, among many other titles at club level.

But despite his 74 years and the promise of retirement, Felipao decided to accept this new challenge, and for the Brazilian and South American fans, his presence on the playing fields will always be a reason for applause.

Coudet’s campaign in Mineiro was more than acceptable: he led 35 games, with 21 wins, 8 draws and 6 losses. The team is fourth in the Brazilian tournament, 6 points behind Botafogo, and has a good chance of reaching the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.
