Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin breaks Wayne Gretzky’s record with 403rd career road goal in win over Canucks

Washington Capitals great Alex Ovechkin passed NHL legend Wayne Gretzky for most road goals with two first-period goals in Tuesday night’s win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Ovechkin started the night with another record, scoring his 135th goal in the game’s opener at 5:35.

After removing the puck from a pass from behind the netting Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes Ovechkin scored a quick one to tie Jaromir Jagr for the most game-opening goals in NHL history.

But his record night did not end there.

At the 11:52 mark, Ovechkin fired one from the top left circle to beat Canucks goalie Spencer Martin for his 403rd road goal. one better than Gretzky.

“It’s always good when you beat the Great One,” Ovechkin said after the match. “It doesn’t matter what kind of milestone it is. It’s history.”

Gretzky still holds the NHL record for most career goals with 894 in 1,487 games, while Ovechkin ranks third behind Gordie Howe with 793 in 1,298 games, all with the Capitals.

“I think he’s got 13 goals this year and I mean eight or nine has been like a new record. So it’s been great,” said Washington center Dylan Strome, who had an assist on Ovechkin’s second goal.

“Any time you pass Wayne Gretzky in anything, he deserves a standing ovation, and he got it.”

The Capitals defeated the Canucks 5-1 to improve to 10-11-3 and will continue travel to seattle on Thursday for a three-game road trip to the west.
