Deputies: debated on the fishing gear waste recycling bill

The Committee on Maritime, Fluvial, Fishing and Port Interests, chaired by the Deputy of the Civic Coalition, marina zuvic, received officials and representatives of the sector and civil society to discuss the subject. In this regard, the legislator highlighted “the purpose of advancing and addressing the fishing gear recyclingwith representation of all the voices to be able to build a robust law that gives guarantees to the sector”.

While, Julian SuarezNational Director of Fisheries Coordination and Inspection, explained that “Argentina is the first country in the regular market of trawling gear, in line with the guidelines that the FAO has published internationally because we are aware that fishing activity generates pollution”.

“It has been an important evolution in which we have sustained ourselves to continue advancing with the trawling gear that predominates in the Argentine Sea,” said the official.

Deputies work on advances for disabilities

Oscar Padin, director of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) expressed that: “We have the privilege of having the technical instrument and a lot of help from private companies. They are substantive actors when it comes to meet campaign goals”, he assured.

“The company plays a fundamental role recovering disused networks taking advantage of the freight used to deliver new products. In this way, clients solve the problem of what to do with this obsolete material and I know them incorporate into a recycling loop. 160 tons were recovered”, he contributed.

In addition, diego taboada, president of the Whale Conservation Institute that made an alliance with the Moscuzza company to recycle; spoke about the situation of marine fauna. “It is estimated that more than 135 thousand whales die, defines and others marine mammals caught in these nets”.

“Globally, approximately 45% of all marine animals from the red list of endangered species have been affected by lost or abandoned fishing gear,” he asserted. And, in turn, he added “we must have adequate disposal places. In each instance of the industrial fishing process there must be an appropriate infrastructure. It is one of the main claims of the port sector and it is a question of being able to segregate the materials well”.

“Pollution goes mostly to the sea, the 80% of the waste that falls into the sea is of terrestrial origin, 20% are of maritime origin. The FAO defines 10% of this percentage as fishing gear and that, among all these sources of contamination, the most harmful to the marine ecosystem are fishing gear”, added Bilbao.
