The authorities on the island of Hawaii have declared a state of emergency due to the advance of the lava from the Kilauea volcano towards residential areas and the possibility that it will reach the first homes in the coming days.

The decree, promulgated on Thursday, does not require evacuation, but according to the Efe news agency, it intends to serve as a warning to the population so that they are aware of the danger and have enough time to leave the threatened area before the lava advances.

Kilauea’s eruptions have been continuous since 1983 and the authorities have been monitoring the advance of the lava since the beginning of last month.

The lava ejected by Kilauea, one of the largest volcanoes in the world, could reach the first residential areas in the next seven days.
