‘Living’: Bill Nighy’s Oscar-nominated film sets Netflix US premiere

british drama film Living starring Bill Nighy is coming to Netflix in the United States, with the film coming to the service in early June 2023.

Based on a screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro and directed by Oliver Hermanus, the film follows an English bureaucrat with an icy exterior who begins to soften when a dire forecast inspires him to change course and build his legacy.

Joining Nighty in Living stars Aimee Lou Wood, Tom Burke and Alex Sharp. It had a limited theatrical release in the US late last year following its initial debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the US distribution rights.

The film has a Fresh Certified rating on RottenTomatoes with a 96% score. Paul Byrnes for the Syndey Morning Herald painted the more vivid image in your review, concluding, “The film itself is like eating a delicious dessert: you marvel at all the component parts, but when it ends, you may regret it. It’s lush and richly textured, like the old color images of London we see in the credits, but a bit insistent.”

Living garnered two Oscar nominations at the recent 95th Academy Awards, with Nighy earning a Best Actor nomination and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.

Now, through Sony’s output deal that includes Sony Pictures Classics titles, it’s headed to Netflix in the US. The deal struck between Netflix in the US, and Sony has seen around twenty movies released on theaters starting in 2022 on the service.

However, Sony Pictures Classics has come to the service evenly as titles released under Columbia Pictures. Only Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song, and the soThey haven’t come to Netflix so far, with movies like The Duke, Maternity Sundayand Compartment No. 6 surprisingly absent.

Netflix US will carry Living as of June 5, 2023.

This will be the first time the film has been shown on a video-on-demand streaming service, but it has been available to rent for the past several months.

It is not known if other Netflix regions are set to receive Living soon. Given Lionsgate distributes the film in some territories outside of the US. As a result, we are currently unable to predict any release schedule for countries such as the UK.
