Netflix’s library in the US has just reached another milestone, with 55% of the total library made up of Netflix original series and movies from around the world.

How many titles are on Netflix? As of July 2023, there are 6,621 movies, series, and specials (this number does not include the 60+ games). Of those, 3,657 are Netflix original titles. That library has been built in the space of 10 years, as Netflix recently held.

Netflix seems to be hitting new milestones every summer at its current pace in the US. In August 2022, we reported that Netflix’s Original Library had hit 50/50 parity; the previous year (August 2021), it reached 40%.

Of course, it’s only now touching 55% a year after 50/50 parity suggests the percentage increase is slowing, and there are multiple factors that will continue into the year and possibly years to come.

First of all, as you know, several strikes are causing the stoppage of US productions, in particular (at the time of publication, SAG-AFTRA was ready to start attacking), which means we expect fewer shows and movies in the coming months and years.

Second, and perhaps this is due to the first element: Netflix has been licensing more titles than usual. Whether it’s because of new window deals with companies like Sony Pictures or Universal or because of shows from HBO, Warner Bros. Discovery or others, we’ve seen an increase in licenses.

It is up to you if this is a major change in strategy. One could argue that this is a change on the part of Netflix and the various distributors who, in recent years, have prioritized removing content from Netflix in favor of their own services.

Another thing to mention is that we’ve also seen an increase in Netflix Originals leaving the service in recent years.

What percentage of other Netflix libraries are made up of Originals?

Thanks to the NewonNetflix.info sites, we can also see what percentage of libraries in the UK, Australia and Canada are made up of originals:

  • In the UK (which has gone on a licensing spree in recent years), the library only consists of 45% original titles.
  • In Canada and Australia, the percentage is just over 50% in their library of around 7,000 titles each.

As for whether we ever get to the stage where 100% of Netflix’s library is made up of originals is a long way off, the trajectory spreadsheet that we established a few years ago we suggest that it would be around mid-2027 when we would reach 100%, although, in reality, that is probably not the case.
