Netflix is considering a new war adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel, For whom the Bell TollsWhat’s on Netflix has learned.

A new movie For Whom the Bell Tolls has been in development for at least two decades, with game of Thrones co-creator and co-executive producer David Benioff joined the project in the early 2000s. Back then, the project was with Warner Bros, and Leonardo DiCaprio was inclined to play a part in the movie in ’05. There is little record of what happened to the project after this, and according to cine.comHowever, “DiCaprio will not commit to the project without a director, and so far there is none.”

David Benioff has since mentioned the book in his 2016 article for the New York Times, analyzing his ten favorite books of all time. In the segment For Whom the Bell Tolls, the writer states:

“Yeah, some of the lines are easy to outwit. (“I love you and you are so lovely and so wonderful and so beautiful and it does such a thing to be with you that I feel like I want to die when I am loving you.”) Yes, the constant use of “te” is squeaky. But my love for this novel is not rational. I have no interest in defending him. I loved it from start to finish. No final page has left me so devastated.”

In 2022, we were first told that Netflix might be working on an adaptation through two copyright filings with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Universal’s filing specifically mentioned a “short-form single-image license.”

Fast forward to 2023, and we’ve learned that David Benioff has his sights set on continuing to write the Netflix script as long as he is a long-term collaborator alan taylor is in the sights to lead.

First published in 1940, here is the official synopsis of the book written by Ernest Hemingway, according to good reads:

“The story of Robert Jordan, a young American from the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerrilla unit in the mountains of Spain, tells of loyalty and bravery, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo’s last stand, in his brilliant parody of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe with blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises. and A Farewell to Arms. to create a work that is at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise”.

The story has been adapted in numerous formats, including the Oscar-winning adaptation from 1943 starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.

That’s all we have on the new project for now; We’ll keep you posted when Netflix confirms the project at a later date.
