There are few films that can encapsulate the British drinking and clubbing culture of the late 1990s quite like Human Traffic. For some it will be a reminder of their adult years, for others it may be an education about what their parents did on nights in the 90s.
The Cardiff club scene in the 90s: Five best friends deal with their relationships and personal demons over one weekend. Jip calls himself a sexual paranoid, afraid of being impotent. Lulu, Jip’s partner, doesn’t find many attractions in men. Nina hates her job at a fast food restaurant, and her man, Koop, who dreams of being a great hip-hop DJ, is prone to unprovoked fits of jealousy. The fifth is Moff, whose family is against his behavior. Starting on Friday afternoon, with preparations for the disco, we follow the five from ecstasy-induced fun to an early Saturday morning booze-laden drop-off, followed by the weekend aftermath. It’s breakthrough time for at least three of them.
