They had met two years earlier, when director Enrique Carreras called them to star in the movie “My First Girlfriend.”
He was a popular singer of humble origin who was born in Lules, a Tucuman town that at that time had no electricity, asphalt, or sewers. Her mother left the family home and she was left with her six siblings in the care of her father in a desperate economy. In order to eat, Palito will have to go to work at a young age as a shoeshine boy, bicycle repairman, grave attendant and day laborer in sugar mills.
She, on the other hand, was a girl from Buenos Aires from a good family, the daughter of a traditional marriage made up of a Spanish cabinetmaker and a housewife of Italian descent. Evangelina stepped on stage for the first time when she was barely five years old and at eleven, her aunt took her to appear on the television contest “Lux is looking for a star”. She then participated in the special “All year round is Christmas”, but her success would come some time later, with the sitcom “Señoritas alumnas”, the cycle “Tomorrow to be true” and with the novel “Love has a woman’s face ”.
The truth is that, at first, Palito, who had enormous success with his songs, did not want Evangelina as a co-star in “My First Girlfriend.” However, during the filming of the film, both fell in love when they did a scene in which they danced together. In the movie, Evangelina’s character ends up marrying someone else; however, in real life the ending was very different.
The wedding was broadcast live on television, in a special program hosted by Pipo Mancera that was followed by millions of viewers. It was the first televised wedding in Argentina.
At the same time, hundreds of people moved to the Abbey of San Benito to witness that long-awaited moment.
The honeymoon was in Acapulco and in the southern United States. Later, Palito flew to Spain to film a movie with Rocío Durcal, and Evangelina embarked on what would be the biggest success of her career: Jacinta Pichimahuida.
On March 2, 1967, Palito Ortega and Evangelina Salazar were married in Buenos Aires. The story is also news on Radio Perfil.
