This Thursday the police Singapore announced that it will gradually deploy robots to patrol the streets of its cities. The eastern island, which has a population of 5.6 million inhabitantsis considered the international financial center of the Southeast Asian and the opening to technological innovation in the region.
In the first instance, the robots entered into service at a terminal of the changi airport in April with the aim of increasing the number of police officers on the ground conducting patrols. An experience that reminds us of the classic science fiction film Robocop (1987)directed by the Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven and starring, brilliantly, by Peter Weller.
“It is planned to progressively deploy more patrol robots to increase police operations in Singapore,” the island’s police department told the AFP news agency. Patrol robots are equipped with cameras, sensors, speakers, display, and can emit lights or sirens.
In detail, cyber agents have a c360 degree camera which provides images to police officers in a control room and which can reach the public through loudspeakers. They also have another camera mounted on a mast that can be raised up to two meters and provides a better perspective for the policemen who are in the video surveillance room.
“They can set up a police cordon and warn passers-by during an incident before the police arrive,” the Singapore police statement told reporters. This function is carried out through the use of lights, sirens and speakers, with which all robots are equipped. Finally, passers-by can press a button located on the front of the artificial agent to directly contact the airport police for an immediate response.
