San Lorenzo won with two penalties and continues to put pressure on River

Saint Lawrence continues. He doesn’t play well, it’s true, but he continues. And each time he is closer to River and to the top of this Professional League that has him as an unexpected protagonist, especially because of what he had gone through in recent seasons. Yesterday, in a Gasómetro that reminded us of the good times, they beat Instituto de Córdoba 2-0.

Andrés Vombergar scored both goals for Ciclón from the penalty spot, at 18 and 38 of the second stage. Both were penalties, and served to destroy a game that was presented like this from the beginning.

Because in a frictionless first half, San Lorenzo was the one that controlled the rhythm of the game together with the drive of its people, against an opponent who withdrew and sought to attack on the counterattack. However, that lukewarm domain was not enough to put him to the advantage.

The clearest of the local cast occurred at minute 44, when Vombergar suggested a half turn on the edge of the small area and made possible a lucid intervention by Carranza. Sixty seconds later, the experienced goalkeeper blocked another shot to the front that he plays for the Slovenian national team.

The bad news for the Cyclone in that initial stage was the departure of Perrito Barrios (he was replaced by Ezequiel Cerutti), with a first diagnosis of trauma to his right ankle.

In the second period, San Lorenzo searched more insistently and had its prize, with a penalty that was only sanctioned at 25 minutes, after the VAR reviewed the maneuver for seven minutes. Fernando Alarcón hit Vombergar on the head in the dispute over a set piece and Nicolás Ramírez took a penalty for the locals. At the request of the VAR, he validated it, and the striker himself declared it 1-0.

At minute 38, the goalkeeper of the Cordovan team Jorge Carranza jumped to catch a ball that was rained in the area a few meters from Federico Gattoni and, as he descended, raised his leg, committing a strong offense against the defender. After the VAR review, the referee sent off the Instituto goalkeeper and captain and awarded a penalty that, once again, Vombergar converted into a goal.

The Ciclón de Boedo, which remains undefeated at home (seven wins, two equalities), reached 35 units and was two behind the River line, which today will face Platense at the Monumental.

San Lorenzo will now have to visit a Central Barracas to keep an illusion that seemed distant on fire and is getting closer to being something concrete.
