They discovered that monkeypox has a higher mortality in people with HIV

A study published this Tuesday in the scientific journal The Lancet indicates that the monkey pox could be “fulminant” for those people who suffer HIV advanced and low defenses.

Made in the Germans Trais i Pujo Hospitalis Barcelona; the study analyzes 382 cases of monkeypox in patients with HIVMostly men. The investigation showed that mortality reaches 15% of cases, presenting, in addition, more severe symptoms.

Oriol Mitja, a doctor and research participant, commented that “some of these kids asked for sedation because they said they couldn’t take the pain anymore. The injuries are equivalent to those of a major burn.” The usual symptoms usually include mild vesicles, which disappear within a few weeks, but it seems that these patients have skin ulcers that do not reduce and even extend to the eyes, lung area and intestines.

The monkeypox outbreak, renamed mpox by the World Health OrganizationIt began in May 2022 and some 85,000 cases were registered at the moment.

He also added that the groups most at risk are people living with the virus HIV and who take daily antiretroviral drugs. As the researchers explain, the HIV destroys CD4 lymphocytes, white blood cells responsible for protecting people against infections. The cases of monkeypox under study, identified in men with HIV advanced, a threshold below 200 lymphocytes per cubic millimeter of blood. The norm, in adults/adolescents, is usually between 500 and 1200.

With these values, the second virus that affects them, mpox, is “withering” according to Oriol Mitja: “We don’t call it withering because of its speed, but because it doesn’t stop. Go on and on and on. No matter how many interventions you make, the virus continues to progress.”

The researchers say it is not a new variant of monkeypox, but the same pathogen causes a different disease in people with HIV.

The authors of the instantaneous investigation to the World Health Organization to include mpox or “monkey pox” in the list of deadly HIV/AIDS diseases. Currently, there are 14 registered infections that can be dangerous for people with advanced HIV.

the british doctor chole orkinco-author of the investigation, showed that “everyone with mpox should be tested for HIV. And all the people with HIV and mpox could be tested to measure their defenses.
