US presidential candidates step up campaign efforts in key states

As the US presidential election approaches, major campaigns are underway in several key states that are expected to be pivotal in deciding the November outcome.

This week, Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, is set to visit Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday. Her itinerary also includes stops in Arizona and Nevada later in the week.

On the other side, Sen. J.D. Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, is also expected to attend high-profile events in Wisconsin and Michigan. Plans for North Carolina have been postponed because of an impending tropical storm expected to hit the region.

Harris announced her choice of Walz on Tuesday morning and quickly joined him in Pennsylvania to kick off their joint campaign efforts.

Harris expressed excitement about the partnership with Walz, saying, “I look forward to partnering with someone who is committed to building a promising future and uniting our nation.”

Walz, who has a history of supporting progressive policies during his tenure as Minnesota governor, has been well received by the progressive wing of the party. His background as a former U.S. Army National Guardsman and teacher appeals to diverse demographics of voters, including rural white voters.

Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky praised the pick, noting, “Choosing Walz is a strategic move that will reinvigorate voters in crucial Midwestern states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.”

Jennifer Lawless, a political science professor, described Walz as a moderate but attractive choice for Democrats, especially because of his military background and stance on gun ownership.

Walz’s focus extends to unions, boosting his visibility as Trump seeks to connect with this voter base.

Ahead of the official announcement, the Trump campaign criticized Walz, with Trump campaign press spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt labeling him an “incompetent liberal” and accusing Harris of trying to spread a liberal agenda from California across the country.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, once considered a potential running mate for Harris, has pledged his support for the Harris-Walz duo, who aim to unite Pennsylvanians against Trump.

Meanwhile, Trump endorsed Vance at the Republican Party nominating convention last month. Vance has been outspoken in his criticism of Democratic candidates, particularly targeting their progressive policies.

The campaign developments follow Biden’s decision not to seek reelection, influenced by a difficult debate with Trump.
